MAHE Hosts National Workshop on Sanskrit, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Humanities to Advance Indian Knowledge Systems

Manipal Academy of Higher Education organized a two-day National Workshop on Sanskrit Studies and Technology at its Bengaluru Campus, bringing together scholars and experts to explore the role of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Humanities and Indian Knowledge Systems in shaping future research, computational linguistics and knowledge engineering.

Reinforcing its commitment to advancing Indian Knowledge Systems through interdisciplinary research and innovation, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an Institution of Eminence Deemed to be University, successfully organized a two-day National Workshop on “Sanskrit Studies and Technology: Artificial Intelligence, Digital Humanities and Philosophy in India” on June 18 and 19, 2026. The workshop was conducted by the Centre for Digital Humanities at the MAHE Bengaluru Campus.

The event brought together scholars, researchers, technologists and students from across the country to examine the convergence of Indian Knowledge Systems, Sanskrit studies, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Humanities. It provided a platform to explore how India’s classical knowledge traditions can contribute to contemporary technological innovation and research.

Deliberations during the workshop underscored the significance of Sanskrit and Indian intellectual traditions in computational linguistics, natural language processing, knowledge representation and Artificial Intelligence-driven language technologies. Participants also examined how principles from the Indian grammatical tradition could address modern computational challenges.

Prof. Madhu Veeraraghavan, Pro Vice Chancellor of MAHE Bengaluru, said Sanskrit represents far more than a classical language and stands among humanity’s most sophisticated knowledge systems, encompassing traditions of grammar, logic, philosophy, poetics, mathematics and scientific inquiry developed with exceptional precision and intellectual rigor. He stated that the challenge lies not merely in connecting ancient knowledge with modern developments but in bringing these traditions into meaningful engagement with Artificial Intelligence and Digital Humanities. He added that MAHE Bengaluru believes technological advancement becomes most impactful when guided by cultural depth and scholarly rigor, and that the workshop reflects the institution’s commitment to treating Indian Knowledge Systems as living traditions capable of shaping the future of research, learning and knowledge creation.

The programme featured lectures and interactive sessions delivered by experts from leading academic and research institutions across India. Participants received insights into Sanskrit computational linguistics, Artificial Intelligence applications for Indian languages, digital knowledge systems and the relationship between technology, philosophy and the humanities. The sessions also promoted interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.

One of the major highlights of the workshop was its emphasis on collaborative problem-solving. These discussions strengthened academic networks and generated fresh ideas for future collaborations in computational linguistics, digital preservation, language technologies and knowledge engineering.

The workshop was organized under the academic collaboration between MAHE and SCSVMV, Kanchipuram, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing Sanskrit studies and technology-enabled research. The initiative was guided by the collective vision of the Centre for Digital Humanities, the Department of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, the Manipal Institute of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, and SCSVMV to promote excellence in Sanskrit studies, Digital Humanities and Indian Knowledge Systems through interdisciplinary research and academic cooperation.

Through initiatives of this nature, MAHE Bengaluru Campus continues to strengthen its position as a hub for research and innovation in Digital Humanities and Indian Knowledge Systems. The institution is fostering collaborations that bridge India’s intellectual heritage with contemporary research and technological advancement, reaffirming its role in shaping the future of knowledge creation.
